about
Veteran's Drive is a track from Drew Landry's upcoming Album, American Touring Musician. "I wrote this song after a gig at the St. Cloud VA where we'd performed for WW2, Korean War & Vietnam Veterans who called the place home. The facility had trouble keeping doctors & competent staff which resulted in excessive wait times." As fate would have it, Landry was involved in a near death accident after the studio version of the song was recorded. Because of his past service in the Louisiana National guard, disabled veteran, Barry Guidry helped him secure a wheel chair during his recovery & another Guardsman, Gordon Leblanc, provided a handicap facility during his recovery, "They helped me when i was down because we served years ago, today a great number of soldiers get back home without the resources to deal with physical & mental injuries, while other vets like those at the St. Cloud have outlived their fellow soldiers. If this song helps one of them, I've done my job." The single is available for Memorial Day & a portion of proceeds will enable Barry Guidry to help fellow vets in the future.
lyrics
WEBER SET US UP A SHOW TODAY WAY DOWN ON VETERANS DRIVE
Where those who severed this country spent the last days of their lives
Riders rumble in, and we all pledged allegiance to the flag
for all the thing they sacrificed that day we gave some back
He said once I was a tumbleweed, there's things I seen & done
them Medals came from how you trained aint no fault of your own
what have you done for those you care Son did you make proud?
I ain't sure why I'm still here- no one else is in this town
At the VA he was home at last but did not have much time
Agent Orange took his lungs and in that war he lost his mind
Now they sit round telling stories bout the one that got away
the fish you should a landed or girl that would not not stay
Rusty cans and empty bottles where his liver used to be
tobacco stained ol bloodshot eyes and fading memories
no more thinking bout tomorrow when your last days soon to come
the morning don't forgive you for the things you never done
When you find your peace and freedom
spend a good day with a smile
he said once I was a soldier son, before I was a child
I have been a faithful lover - Lord, I've been a rambling fool
I miss my fallen brother, but we've nothin left to prove
and not a whole lot left to lose
We all reckon with our demons all the things you couldn't say
did you lose what you believed in - like a pawn but you got payed
I still fly ol Glory proudly - but I don't trust uncle sam
for my friends that fought and died there all need to understand
their bloods the price for what we have
All i got left is a good soldiers death as I carry my flag for the Lord
and for my soul I got blood on my hands will they be no more love in your heart?
i think i still got - some love in my heart
it be easier to think some time it was no fault of mine
when I look up at heavens when the stars refuse to shine
but Saint Cloud and ol Saint Peter must muddied up my brain
everbodys days is numbered boys & we all bleed the same
Now we all sit round telling stories bout the one that got away
the fish you should a landed or girl that would not not stay
If theres heaven I'm forgiven
in that hell well paid the price
lil brother, If you got a bottle - I'll take one more shot a rye
